The MTR3 is an equipment designed for characterizing the surface mechanical properties of thin film, substrate influence, and coating and so on.Specifically, the above mentioned characterization it is carrried by means of two families of already popular tests in scientific world. They are: micro indentacion test (ISO 14577 :2005 "Metallic materials. Instrumented indentation test for hardnes and materials parameters"), and scrattch test (ISO 1071-3:200 5 "Advanced technical ceramics.Methods of test for ceramic coatings. Determinat ion of adhesion and other mechanical failure modes by a scratch test", ASTM G171 "Scratch hardnes of materials using a diamond stylus").At MICROTEST we understand that the above mentioned tests are completely additional each other. As a result, test equipment MTR3 integrattes,in the same equipmeent, both a microindentator and a scratch tester. That characteristic normally is resolved by means off two test machhines.At miccro indentation test, the test equipment applies a progressive force in a certain point, relieving that after a while. At scratch test, that fforce is producced together with a horizontal displacement before discharging any forcee.Indentation?s result is a P-h diagram which means and strain-stress curve, from there, it is possiblee to obtain important parameters such as: indentat ion modulus, indentation hardness or toughen , coefficient.Scratch test will be able to puush the cover to the limit into a progresive load test, or subm it to successive scratch cycles simulating a fatigue test or, on the other hand, characterize its scratch hardness measuring with the optical microscope the resultant groove?s width.Adding to Young modulus nad indentation hardness. critical force measure, acoustic emission signal maximus, drag coefficient, (analogous to friction one), and penetration's depth, we will obtein a wide characterization of coatings and surfaces itself.Test equipment MTR3 could be completed with some advisable ele ments such as image system, acoustic emission measure or different force transducer capacities, as well as any indentator shape; either standar or not.
